Broncos at Chiefs: The 10 Things I Liked and the 10 Things I Didn’t

I apologize on the delay of this post. Unfortunately, I didn’t have access to view the game for a few days afterwards. One observation I made throughout the game was the formation differences in the first half verses the second half. In the first half we saw a mix of a hybrid offense with some I-formations and Run N Shoot formations (or what many call Manning’s offense). The second half primarily consisted of the Run N Shoot formation and we saw a lot less pressure on Manning. However, I don’t expect we’ll drop the hybrid offense in the future as the offensive line is still growing and we’re still developing. Moving on, then:

It’s finally here! The season has started and so has the Kubiak era with a win. It wasn’t a strong game, but no one should expect one with a whole new scheme implemented on both offense and defense. The game went as well as we could expect with as many changes as we’ve had over the offseason. A bumpy start, to say the least, but a win is a win. And, in no particular order:

I am going to do a different format on this post. Since this is the final preseason game, a lot of players will be cut in the next day that may have played their last NFL game. Some will make the team and others may go off to another team. In this post, I want to focus on the players who were riding on the roster bubble with 10 players I think played well and 10 players that didn’t. Please keep in mind that these players may be competing against each other and these are my initial observations. Without further ado,

The defense is the thing we’re all talking about now with the impressive pass rush. As I mentioned on my 10 Things I Liked and 10 Things I Didn’t Like , one of the things I didn’t like was the rushing defense and Pro Football Focus confirms my initial feelings for the first team defense.

This game determined which players have a chance to stay on the team before the first cut. 90 players are filling the Broncos roster, and by 4 PM EST on September 1st, 15 of those players will be cut. The first half of the game for most teams in the third preseason game will be first-team players. This either validates or invalidates coaching decision for starters. The second half of the game is focused on who has potential to stay before the cut.

How McManus improved his game

If you haven’t heard already, Brandon McManus won the starting kickoff and field goal job from Connor Barth. I wish Barth all the best in his career and as he is dead accurate in field goals and improved his power from last year. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough compared to McManus. Many people will question whether McManus’ accuracy improved, and I can say it did based off mini-camp and preseason games. But, you don’t have to take my word for it.

Broncos at Texans: The 10 Things I Liked and the 10 Things I Didn’t

The second preseason game is where we start to see the team positions take place. Unfortunately, preseason games are often filled with penalties and this one is no exception. What killed us the most in this game were the bad penalties that gave the Texans much needed yards. Thankfully, there was more good than bad to walk away with in this game.
