This is what I think too. Reading between the lines on his comments yesterday, I think he wants the respect of being paid at the top of the market but also understands the competitive effect of a top of the market contract so he won’t look to shatter it.

    https://twitter.com/Jason_OTC/status/949505530124554240

    • VonSwenson

Remember what we thought Von Miller’s second contract would be? “Oh no, Suh’s contract is an outlier, a special case. Watt got three DPOYs and he’s not that high.” Then, the most expensive defensive contract ever.

  • ohiobronco
    • bradley

I remember how Manning didn’t want to be paid more than Brady. That seemed odd at the time but now I can just put it down to PM knowing what a whiny bitch Brady is.

What we really need is a picture of Garoppolo drinking a glass of orange juice.

          • WhoShotBobbyHumphrey

I’ve been reading a lot of things lately, and who knows what’s true, but it sounds like Brady ran Jimmy G out by crying to Kraft that he was going to play until he’s 50 because he has a new quack doctor boyfriend, and Belichick is now discontent. San Francisco, and Jimmy are the real winners here.

          • Yahmule

Brady knew that if they had an open QB training competition in camp next summer – which they wouldn’t – Jimmy GQ would have kicked his ass. I think it just fucked with his confidence to have a better quarterback on the roster.

          • WhoShotBobbyHumphrey

Not just better. Better looking. That’s 2 fucking strikes for Tom Brady. Add that, and tattling on him for closing the doors for treatment at “TB12”, and you’re on your way to San Francisco.

          • Yahmule

Brady’s lucky he’s not out on the veldt. That young lion would drive him into isolation or kill him.

          • WhoShotBobbyHumphrey

One thing I learned about being 38 is I’m not 28.

          • Steven_Searls

I’d love to be 38 again lol. Wait until you hit 60.

          • Drewredux

I think folks need to let the tape catch up before annointing Jimmy G.

          • WhoShotBobbyHumphrey
    • Nick

Neither Jason nor I can read Elway’s mind, but I don’t agree with Jason on this. I think the bad QB play should force all options on the table. Not saying the Broncos will go spendy at QB, but it should not be ruled out.

      • ohiobronco

It’s also possible he will take the reactive approach and look to explicitly do the opposite of what he has been doing.

      • Agreed, I’m sure they are ready to spend after the dog shit QB play of last two years, but $30m AAV for Cousins is crazy. I know there may be some sour grapes in Jay Gruden’s comments but he’s pretty much on point… good not great QB.

      • Rob Rooney

The thing with Manning was that it wasn’t about the money. He wanted to get paid but the number one thing was to find the right place. Elway sold him on Denver (rightly I will add) first and then paid him.

With Cousins I can’t say if it is more about winning and respect than money but I feel like it is from his comments. I think he wanted to be paid well but also be at a place they want him and he can win. So I agree with Jason below that he isn’t looking to just maximize his earnings but he does want to make a little more than the last guy (Stafford), which is fair.

If he hits free agency I think the organization and how it is sold will be as important as the money. This could give Elway an advantage even over Jacksonville (though I think they would prefer Eli if available).

    • MattR

I have issues with every part of Jason’s second tweet. Manning taking less than top dollar is not proof that Denver wouldn’t have paid him more if it had been necessary to seal the deal. It only demonstrates that they understood the market and what it would take to sign him. It also ignores the major neck injury that Manning was recovering from.

With Kaepernick, they didn’t want to make a long term commitment when they believed they had their QB of the future on the roster in Lynch. They were wrong, but I don’t think it is an indication that they had to have a bargain. They just didn’t think the need was that great.

With Osweiler, if anything the evidence shows that Elway was willing to overpay compared to his actual value as a player (even if Houston was willing to overpay even more).

I don’t know that any of those situations can be seen as predictive of what the team will do this offseason when they acknowledge the huge need for a new QB.

      • Drewredux

Unfortunately, it adds up to they are going to pay a guy that has earned, at most, a bridge contract more than Andrew friggin’ Luck. It falls well short of ideal.

      • PiperAR

“With Kaepernick, they didn’t want to make a long term commitment when they believed they had the QB of their future in the roster in Lynch ”
No. Most serious negotiating for Kaepernick happened prior to the draft when the Broncos QB roster was Buttfumble and a 7th round nobody. Lynch was not yet drafted and there was no way of knowing that he would be drafted.

  • Nick

Interesting how the wording here is “as Jon Gruden’s GM” instead of “and have Jon Gruden as his head coach”.

The dream (or nightmare for some of you) that I had last night in bed:

    1. Browns: Sam Darnold
    2. Giants: Josh Rosen
    3. Colts: Saquon Barkley
    4. Cardinals (from Texans via Browns): Baker Mayfield
    5. Broncos: Josh Allen

    • Steven_Searls

      God I hope not.

    • Yahmule

If Elway wants to stick his neck out for a kid who is basically a coin flip on every dropback, I’m not going to lose any sleep over it. I’m tired of living in dread over stupid decisions I can’t control.

      • Drewredux

Aleen looks less of a project and more of a football player than PL in even the most most glorious wet dream. He is obviously a mega roll of the dice, but he does show flashes of comprehension, moxie and unbeliavable arm talent. He is inconsistent in his placement, but he has shown the ability to drop it in buckets and hit guys in stride in miniscule windows. I think his futility is greatly overrated. Wyoming is a collection of last-option letter of intent players, and Wyoming’s best and brightest, who are incidently under-tooled againt the Morrero, Loiusiana, So Cal and Texas school boy set. He plays with a bunch of future accountants and farm hands.

The long and short of it is he is an infinitely better prospect than PL and Oz the Great ever had any chance of being.

        • Alaskan

Does going to school in Laramie influence your opinion?
Allen looks to me like the latest giant with a cannon arm that JE falls for.
We have seen a bunch of those already.
But I hope I’m wrong because I do expect to see him wearing Orange soon.

          • Drewredux

I’m not wild about him by any means, at least not considering the Broncos current situation. He is just, IMO, vastly superior to the last two premium pick QBs the Broncos selected.

Contrary to the emrging legend of his ineptitude, the three “NFL players” that elevated his game and apparently created a mirage of competence are all bouncing on and off practice squads. He isn’t exactly consistent, but I see plenty evidence of field vision and the ability to drop balls between coverage layers and generally throw with touch.

He also play in a pro style system. That seriously pushes down completion percentages. For example, Josh Rosen is widely considered the most gifted passer in the class, and his % is a whopping 3 points higher than Allen. Niether gets to look to the sideline presnap and told where to throw the ball like the pure spread guys.

He interviews well, too. Likable, motivated and humble.

            I’d love him from 25 -4O. A lot. Too big a risk at 5.

          • Yahmule

It’s not my desire to piss all over a 21 year old kid, who is by all accounts a quality young man, but the process encourages very frank evaluations.

Brian Hill was a terrific college running back and the Cowboys undisputed MVP in 2015 and 16. He finished second in the Mountain West in rushing both years.

The caliber of Allen’s teammates was equal to the players defending him during every conference game. Only one 300 yard passing game in two seasons and change doesn’t even seem possible in this day and age.

          • Drewredux

All true. He is uber-superduper high risk.

I think its all irrelevant from our perspective anyway.. Two old-school GMs have to pass on him to give Elway the temptation, but one or the other wont be able to get visions of Big Ben out of their head (althogh I think a poor man’s Elway is the better comp.)

          • Yahmule

I hope Elway has to make his decision with Rosen still on the board. :~)

    • Drewredux

I think there is a solid chance that Rosen is sitting there for picking at 5. That’d be almost tragic if Denver feels they don’t need him at that point.

I totally believe Dorsey has a boner for Allen. The genius Dave Gettleman will be all over Letterjacket 2 (Darnold), leaving Denver the choice of the best football playing QBs at 5 (Mayfield, Rosen).

  • Carsonic

Would anyone be willing to post an article with a QB draft rundown – strengths/weaknesses, growth/regression, etc.? I have a vague idea that Mayfield and Rosen are the top 2 guys, but not being a follower of the college game, and what with 2 of them named Josh (crazy!!), I don’t have a great picture of who’s out there, and would love to be able to have a reference to come back to as the draft approaches.
(Thanks in advance, if anyone takes me up on this.)

Does anyone remember the conditions of the Ty Sambrailo trade with ATL? I was just looking at the projected 2018 picks. I’d forgotten (or maybe I never knew) that it was a conditional trade.

    • Nick

As far as I know it’s an unconditional 2018 5th.

  • Drewredux

Anybody put the microscope to Taven Bryan? He has a Marinovichy back story, but the local flavor is cool. Not a lot of Natrona County HS (Casper) kids go to star at Florida while earning J.J. Watt comps.

He could be there at 40.

    • Yahmule

He’s the type of big versatile DE the Broncos like. The Derek Wolfe comps are more accurate, IMO. The JJ Watt talk is more about his physical potential and weight room prowess than anything he’s accomplished on the field yet. If he was really Watt 2.0, everyone would be projecting him into the top ten.

      • Drewredux

Sure. He hasn’t matched his production to his tool box, but he is exactly the guy that shoots up the board when his measurables are on display.

        • Yahmule

He’s one of several big defensive linemen I like this year. Vita Vea would be awesome in several yards of orange fabric. So would Christian Wilkins or Da’Ron Payne. For some reason, everybody seems to think defensive line is not a priority. I think we’re dangerously thin. Wolfe’s recent comments about his intent to play for several more years didn’t allay my concerns about his neck at all. Playing football with spinal stenosis is crazy. The Steelers were idiots to draft Jarvis Jones when they knew he had this condition and his career was pretty much done after four years.

  • Royalwithcheese
    • Nick

I will be furious if the Broncos give up anything more than a 4th to a division rival for a 34 year old QB with one year left on his contract.

      • Yahmule

I’ll give them shit and shove them in it.

        • Steven_Searls

KC ain’t going to trade Smith to Denver. Just not going to happen imo.

          • Nick

And even if the Chiefs were willing to offer Smith to a division rival, I’d be highly suspicious of their motives. Why would any team trade a QB to a division rival if they thought he was still starter caliber?

    • Rob Rooney

KC ended up trading 2 second round picks for Smith (#34 in 2013 and #56 in 2014 which eventually became Cody Latimer). You have to figure they are looking at similar compensation for the guy.

    • InSiemianWeTrust

Hope Alex sucks in the post season! For many reasons.

      • Yahmule

I hope he plays great and they feel like they have to keep him. But he won’t. He’s just good enough to lose with.

      • His playoff stats in 6 games: 12TD, 2 INT, 60% comp., 1400 yds. Pretty good except the 2-4 record…

  • Royalwithcheese
    • Steven_Searls

I doubt he will be available unless we trade up to get him.

      • WhoShotBobbyHumphrey

If he was there would you take him (assuming we don’t get Cousins)?

        • Steven_Searls

Yes, assuming that we don’t go the FA route and sign Cousins.

  • Royalwithcheese
    • Steven_Searls

I’d take him in the second round.

      • Royalwithcheese

        I’d be ecstatic.

Between Michael Wolff’s book and the ESPN Patriots piece, there’s never been a better time to read about the dysfunctional behavior of horrible people.

  • Broncos777

I don’t know if this has been mentioned, but the Broncos list Sean Kugler as the “OL Coach-Guards/Centers”. They also have Assistant OL Coach Chris Strausser not he staff. It’s interesting to me that they specified G/C for Kugler. I wonder if Strausser will focus not the tackles, or they have another plan/hire in mind.

    • Someone posted a link the other day to a note saying Strausser had the asst. tag removed and was OL – Tackles. Seems like an odd arrangement.

  • Broncos777

Also, has anyone heard any news about who might replace OLB coach Fred Pagac?

          • Or it was anyway. Never mind. :/

9-7 team that’s 22 points underwater on the season. Mularkey should be fired, IMO.

      • T. Jensen

I remember being so excited for him cause he had so few drops in college…

        • Laces Out

I really like him as a Bronco but I think it was a good move to let him walk

          • Rob Rooney

Sanders was a great upgrade from Decker, and cheaper too!

    • RSH

Better to drop a pass than continually trip over one’s own feet. 🙂

  • Laces Out

Gruden is twice as annoying as he used to be to me now that he’s going to be the Raiders coach… he’s kissing Andy Reid’s and the Chiefs ass all game too

  • Gruden got the Mark Davis haircut in advance of the “significant” press conf. on Tuesday.

    • RSH

I tell you what. I am going to make over $100 million. The least I could do is get a matching haircut of the idiot paying me that kind of coin. Wild, man.

  • Laces Out

I really want Tennessee to figure these guys out it looks like all they have to do is take away those dump off screens

  • Laces Out

So we have 3x Broncos on the Titans right Williams, Woodyard who is a beast, & Decker dropping balls?

  • Royalwithcheese

    That was a fumble?

    • Two fumbles missed, Mariota and Kelce. Triplette is the worst ref in NFL, hands down. Vinovich is a prick, but Triplette just has no clue.

  • I don’t love Smith, but anyone that thinks Cousins is worth $10-12m per more than Smith is crazy. Smith playoff stas through first half today: 14TD, 2INT 1630 yds., 62% comp. and will be 3-4 in playoffs after today.

    • Andrew

The question is will he get cut loose or will the chiefs insist on trading him.

    • Hank Mardukis

He’s a soon to be 34 year old game manager having the best season of his career 12 years in. No thanks.

      • I’m not saying I want him that badly. I recognize his limitations. But he’s way better than our current stable. And 2 yrs. for $35m while drafting his (hopeful) replacement Is more appealing than Cousins as the highest paid QB in league, no?

        • Hank Mardukis

Denver is just as likely (or probably more likely) to draft another Paxton Lynch than the quarterback of the future.

  • Nick

Now this is a great play line:

3rd and Goal at KC 6
    (6:44 – 3rd) (Shotgun) M.Mariota pass short left to M.Mariota for 6 yards, TOUCHDOWN.

I’m glad I’ve only had the chance to watch the second half. This is kinda fun to watch.

  • Nick

So yeah, I guess going for 2 early was stupid in this case.

    • Yep. Now you could’ve just kicked again and been up by 3 anyway. Oh well. KC will probably take lead on FG now (and then find way to blow it at end )

    • DCJ1

But the Ten Million Dollar Coach said they had to go for 2.

  • DCJ1

    Narrowhead really booing Smith?

    • Yahmule

How many touchdown passes has he caught today?

      • DCJ1

Yeah, you’re right. The QB really needs to be more well rounded.

While I wouldn’t be booing Smith at this point, I do hope KC trades him to CLE or NYG.

    • Maybe booing Reid? For forgetting he had a top flight running back?

      Or maybe saying “Boo-urns” “Boo-urns “?

      • Yahmule

    • Nick

Chiefs gonna Chief. Don’t ask why, it’s a natural fact.

    • Yahmule

They have a quarterback who is just good enough to lose with.

      • Also a coach/OC that refused to run up 21-3.

Don’t you normally hate it when people blame soley the QB and not the rest of the team

        • Yahmule

No, I find it comical when people refuse to look at the totality of a player’s career and accept him for what he is.

  • Laces Out

Wow.. chances just increased that Alex Smith will be released even though it’s not his fault on that one…

    • The Chiefs will be a worse team without Smith. He’s criminally under-appreciated.

      • Laces Out

Maybe so but I don’t think they’re going to let Mahomes sit on the bench after another loss in the playoffs first round

        • I agree, but they’ll be in for a disappointment when they realize that Mahomes is a downgrade, at least in the short-term.

    • Someone will trade for him. Likely Cleveland fist in line.

      • Jeremy

Or us. But I agree he’ll be traded instead of released. 1 year 17 million deal is a steal for any starting caliber QB

Oh Man – You gotta try the Boulevard Bourbon Barrel Quad (Belgian Quadrupel)

Though anything they make is pretty dark good!

    • cjfarls

Mix 50-50 it with the Rogue chocolate stout…. FABULOUS. You can even get “black-and-tan” layers if you’re careful.

The Broncos have 17 home playoff wins.

How can they be heartbroken? They are the Chiefs, they should expect to lose at home in the playoffs!

2 years straight the Broncos matched the Chiefs playoff wins.

      • Yahmule

The Chiefs greatest talent is their ability to suck their rube fans back in year after year.

    • T. Jensen

How does that count for fantasy? Does he get points for the pass and reception?

      • Nick

I thought the exact same thing. Fantasy experts needs to answer this for us.

        • GoBroncos816

That 3 for passing td, 6 for receiving, .4 ish for receiving td and .13 ish for passing yards. In my non ppr league. 9.43

        • Rileyrott

In our ESPN league, that would be 4 for passing TD, 6 for TD catch, 1 for PPR reception, 0.6 for 6 yards receiving, and 0.3 for 6 yards passing = 11.9 points.

      • SterlingMalloryArcher

Yes, in just about any scoring system I’ve ever seen. In the one I run it would be 6 for the passing TD, 6 for the receiving TD, .18 for 6 yards passing and .6 for 6 yards receiving. 12.78 points.

  • DCJ1

Kind of wondering if the playoff futility will get Reid fired. He’s turned the Chefs into a decent, not good/great team. They won the AFC West by default this year, and the playoff failures are on the coaching.

    • They fired John Dorsey last offseason after he improved the roster considerably. Frustration can make people do strange things.

      • Would love to get the real story there, must have been a personality issue.

    • Nick

Shame the Chiefs don’t have an available beloved coach that they can throw $100 million at.

  • Yahmule

    Rams really bungled that.

  • T. Jensen

Man I miss the son of bum.

    • Nick

I keep forgetting about him when I’m making my Super Bowl pecking order. I should have LAR higher.

  • T. Jensen

Imo cousins and Ryan are about the same player.

  • Nick

Was this aired when the Chiefs thought they had taken that Henry “fumble” to the house?

    Rams blowing it.

    • Laces Out

No thanks to your shitty tackling….if you’re hurt get off the field! That’s not noble

  • Nick

Rams may be about to get seriously screwed even if this replay is confirmed, because I think there will be a 10 second runoff no matter what. They were just about to spike it at 20 seconds.

    • Nick

Or not. If they didn’t get that right, it still feels like the fair thing to do.

      • Jeremy

Hochali is blowing the game management here.

Offsides totally counts as a play, unless they meant to call encroachment.

        • Nick

The Rams are at least happy to get 10 extra seconds on that overturn to an incomplete pass…

          • Jeremy

It benefits the Rams, but it is still the wrong call.

          • DCJ1

So as far as I know, only offensive penalties stop play. Illegal motion by an OL stops the play, and the subsequent discussion determines the encroachment penalty. The only other time the play is whistled dead is offsides unabated to the QB.

Refs are very lax and inconsistent with this rule.

    • DCJ1

I have no clue what the officials are trying to do.

    • Nick

  • DCJ1

Wait. What happened to the ten seconds runoff for an offensive penalty?

    • Nick

The ten second runoff is only for pre-snap penalties.

But I’m still confused why there wasn’t a ten second runoff after they reviewed the deep Woods catch even if they confirmed it. I thought that would be the same thing that screwed the Lions earlier in the season.

Unless the Titans pull off a Hans Gruber miracle, the Broncos are the only ones in the “tied with 1” category that went on to win the Super Bowl.

Wade’s defense is gassed. It has been on the field an inordinate amount of time tonight.

  • Jeremy

Would Ed McCaffrey’s famous block in Super Bowl 32 be illegal today?

    • Laces Out

Yep…. and every catch that is slow down to the 10 trillion millisecond probably wouldn’t have happened in the history of the NFL either
