Danny Trevathan To Sign With The Bears

This really isn’t surprising. Best wishes to Trevathan.

I am trying to get some other work done at the office, but I will do what I can to update this page, assuming Nick doesn’t do it first.

ETA: Tweet should be correct now. As you can imagine, this has been a hectic day.

UPDATE (Nick): (8:10 PM MT) I originally cited an Ian Rapoport tweet “roughly” putting Trevathan at $7M APY, but Adam Schefter has clarified that downward:

As I thought, that puts Trevathan at a pretty clear 5th round compensatory pick value for 2017.  However, he is currently being cancelled out by the acquisition of Donald Stephenson.

Thanks For The Memories, Peyton

Admit it: You all knew it was coming.

The signs all pointed to Peyton Manning calling it a career. Sure, you might have heard the rumblings that he wanted to keep playing, but that’s typical of people who are about to leave a job they truly love, regardless of the reasons they may be about to leave.

But after four straight AFC West titles, two AFC titles and one Super Bowl win, along with a record-setting 2013 season and the passing records all claimed, there was nothing more for Peyton Manning to prove.

Not as a member of the Broncos. Not as a member of any other team.

General Thoughts On Broncos And SFAs

Since we are seeing the list of street free agents growing, I wanted to toss out some general thoughts about who the Broncos would likely consider, in terms of positions of need.

We have already seen some familiar names cut and more are likely to come. What I want to do is sort out specific positions, rather than naming names, to get an idea of what the Broncos will be looking for.

Because I talked about quarterbacks yesterday, I won’t go into that again, but look at other positions in which a street free agent could come into play.

The Remaining QB Dominos

Given that we are fast approaching the start of free agency, and particularly with the questions about the quarterback market, I figure it’s a good time to examine where the teams with the biggest questions at QB stand and how each might affect what the Broncos ultimately do.

I won’t rehash too much of where I stand regarding Osweiler, but we must remember that, if the Broncos don’t come to terms with Osweiler on a new contract, that doesn’t mean all is lost. Every move that another team makes with the quarterback position affects what other teams may or may not do and what the bigger picture could look like.

I’ll keep the focus on teams other than the Broncos who are either in the market for a starting quarterback or could be facing a change with their backup quarterback. In some cases, what happens with the backups could have just as much of an effect as what happens with those who could be starters to open the 2016 season.

Why Extending Von Miller Now Makes Sense

With Ian Rapoport reporting that the Broncos are working aggressively to get a long-term contract completed for Von Miller, I wanted to examine what this would mean in terms of how the Broncos manage their 2016 cap situation.

The short answer is that, by signing Miller to an extension now, the Broncos can reduce his cap charge for this year by putting more of his first-year salary into a signing bonus, whereas by using the tag on him, they can put more of his first-year salary into the space committed to the tag and keep his signing bonus low.

While keeping a player’s signing bonus as low as possible is ideal for ensuring any dead money hits for cutting a player early are minimal, sometimes you’re OK with giving the player a larger signing bonus if he has proven he is worth committing to for the long term.

Free Agent, Free Agent, Who’s Got The Free Agent

I don’t really have a lot more to write about NFL free agency, but thought it might be a fun exercise to predict where some of the top free agents could be headed.

I pulled Walter Football’s list of top 90 free agents, sorted out the players who will or are likely getting a franchise tag, removed the restricted free agents (because most likely will get high tenders from their current teams) then looked at a few other names and projected where I think they will be headed.

Walter Football’s rankings, of course, are just one site’s opinion, so I stuck with the players I imagine most everyone would agree are the best of the free agents out there. Either way, this is just something I’m doing for kicks. This is by no means a complete list of free agents and those I list as getting the franchise tag isn’t the full list of that, either
