In the ninth of Thin Air’s series on considerations for the Broncos Ring of Fame is Steve Foley (1976-1986).
Loading ...Steve Foley joined the Broncos just as the Orange Crush was ripening into the force that it would unleash upon the NFL. He did not have the stardom of a Randy Gradishar or the loquaciousness of a Tom Jackson, but he still largely provided a consistent contribution to the defense. For all seasons except for his last and the strike shortened 1982 season, Foley netted at least 3 interceptions. His 44 career interceptions are still an all time Broncos record.
Foley also exhibited some versatility for the Broncos. In the 1970s, he played cornerback, while in the 1980s he transitioned to safety. During that time in the 1980s, he would pair with Dennis Smith to form a formidable safety tandem. By the time he retired, it would only be a one season stall before a rightful successor could be found: some guy named Atwater.
