Open Thread: Broncos Initial Depth Chart

Here is the initial Broncos depth chart, per Cameron Wolfe. I will update this as I am able to, but feel free to discuss the depth chart.

Bear in mind that this is, by no means, finalized. There are four preseason games in which certain players have a chance to impress and nail down roster spots.

Fantasy Football Rankings: Running Backs

Continuing along with the fantasy football rankings, I have the running back rankings after the jump.

As for the planned fantasy league on Yahoo, I am still on the fence about that. We had about seven or eight people who said they would be interested.

Some general notes about running backs in fantasy leagues: Many of the proven players carry some question marks, so you don’t necessarily want to follow the old advice of taking two RBs with your first two picks. Drafting one in the first two rounds is a good idea, but from there, look for value.

Fantasy Football QB Rankings

While everyone comes here to read good analysis of football, I imagine many of us have fun with fantasy football.

So I’m going to share my fantasy football positional rankings over the next few days, along with general advice about each position. Keep in mind this is from a fantasy league perspective and that it does not necessarily reflect what happens on the actual football field.

And I’ll use this first post to ask if there is any interest in me running a fantasy football league. If enough people are interested, I will put a league together on Yahoo. I’d be looking for at least 10 teams but no more than 14. Just let me know in the comments if you are interested.

With that in mind, let’s examine the first of my fantasy football rankings: the quarterbacks.

Final Word On Proposed Contract For Von Miller

I had a little bit of time to put together a proposed contract for Von Miller that would give him more in fully guaranteed money and total guarantees, yet still give the Broncos a chance to get out of the deal after three years.

Before I get to it, Joel Corry broke down what he expects will happen with each of the franchise tagged players not signed to long-term deals. He expects Miller and the Broncos will reach an agreement, but I want to focus on the reported details he shared of where the Broncos’ last offer stands: $114.5M over six years, $38.5M fully guaranteed upon signing, $39.8M guaranteed over the first two years, $21.5M signing bonus, and $58M in total guarantees.

One comment I will make is that I am surprised the Broncos are going with a $21.5M signing bonus, because that would mean more than $4M will be pro-rated over the first five years of the deal. Assuming the Broncos keep him on the roster for at least three years, that would mean a dead money charge of more than $8M if he were to be released at that point. Of course, the Broncos aren’t guaranteed to part ways with Miller after three years and are more likely hoping Miller will be with the franchise for the next five years, but whether he actually collects money from the sixth year of the contract remains to be seen.

Happy Fourth Of July, Everyone

I’m sure most of you are spending the day celebrating the holiday. So I’m just going to leave you with one link, to Jake Plummer’s guest writing for MMQB.

In the piece, Plummer talks first about Pat Tillman, then discusses his efforts to get the NFL to recognize the benefits of cannabinoids over opioids for treating pain.

I’ll leave the rest of thread open for people to discuss what they want or leave holiday wishes to the rest of the Thin Air-ites.

What Can We Learn From Luck’s Deal For Miller’s Deal?

As you may have heard, Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck signed a new contract that will carry a new money average of $24.594M per season. I thought it might be worth examining this contract to see if there are any implications for an impending deal for Von Miller.

While it’s true that Luck and Miller play different positions, how Luck’s contract measures up against other quarterbacks might indicate how Miller’s contract may measure up against other pass rushers.

Jason Fitzgerald broke down Luck’s contract and the details can be found here. Let’s examine how the numbers measure up and what it will likely mean for a Miller contract.

The General Pattern With Player Contracts

Nick has already shared the details about Broncos linebacker Brandon Marshall’s contract. From a first glance, it would appear that the deal is a “three years then we’ll see” deal, but in reality, it’s not. It’s actually in line with how a player such as Marshall would be extended.

But how Marshall has been extended, how Von Miller will need to be extended, and how any extension for Emmanuel Sanders plays out, are all going to be different things.

The one thing to remember about any contract extensions in the NFL is they really work like this: The elite players gets contracts that are really “three years then we’ll see,” the good players and once-elite-but-now-aging players are getting “two years then we’ll see,” and everybody else is getting what amounts to a one-year deal.
